Sensitivity labels created through Information Protection directly strengthen Insider Risk Management: activity involving content labeled as highly sensitive is automatically weighted more heavily in risk scoring, helping investigators focus on the incidents that matter most. In turn, Adaptive Protection uses a user's insider risk level to automatically adjust how strictly Data Loss Prevention policies apply to that individual — tightening controls around higher-risk users without applying the same friction to the rest of the organization. Together, the two form a connected system: Information Protection defines what data matters most, and Insider Risk Management watches for the behavior that puts it at risk.

Basic sensitivity labeling is included with Microsoft 365 E3 and Business Premium. Advanced capabilities — including automatic labeling, endpoint protection, and Insider Risk Management itself — require Microsoft 365 E5 or the Purview Suite add-on.
